The Book Of Liz

Director’s note: A Philosophy Lesson Slips on a Banana Peel

Since mankind first clawed its way out of the primordial ooze and developed its first cognitive thought, we have been obsessed with finding our place in the world and our reason for being there. What is the meaning of life? Does God really exist? What came first: the chicken, the egg, or the oversized peanut? Such questions haunt all of us as we muddle through our daily lives trying to scratch out our place in the world and decipher our reason for existence. The Book of Liz by Amy and David Sedaris is an off-the-wall comedy that explores our search for purpose and belonging. As you enjoy tonight’s performance, I hope you laugh, a lot. If the next hour and a half is not a hoot and a half, than we simply have not done our job and should be beaten over the head with a pickling oar. But while you’re catching a breath between laughs, I challenge you to consider Liz’s search for self-fulfillment and the lessons we can all learn from a sweaty, elderly cheesemaker. Like a philosophy lecture that ends with a cream pie slinging fight, her bizarre little story can teach us all to reexamine our own lives, faith, and choices in snack food.
